Fiona Kenworthy
BSLT, PGCert Adv Clinical Research, MNZSTA
Clinical Director, speech-language therapist and communication accessibility specialist
Kia ora, I'm Fiona. I'm a specialist speech language therapist with 26 years experience supporting children and young people across health, education, disability and justice sectors. I believe communication is fundamental to participation, belonging and well being. My work focuses on helping children, families and organisations remove barriers to communication through practical, trauma informed, culturally safe relationship based approaches.
During this time I contracted to MOE, RTLB, Oranga Tamariki and the Intensive Wraparound Service. More recently I worked for four years as a Court-appointed Communication Assistant and Court Victim Advisor for the Ministry of Justice and Oranga Tamariki (Youth Justice residence and Family Group Conferences). This provided opportunities to deep dive into impacts of trauma and marginalisation on participation and communication and invited an innovative approach to achieve engagement and meaningful, practical outcomes for children and youth in the justice sector.
I work alongside tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and organisations from an affirming and strengths-based lens. Together we identify and resolve barriers to understanding, accessibility and authentic participation. My key strengths are connection, creativity and curiosity.
I also provide training, supervision and consultancy services for organisations. I take a practical, evidence-informed and collaborative approach to helping create cultures of equitable access, accessible communication and authentic participation.
Alongside my clinical and consultancy work, I study Te Reo Māori at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, contribute to professional leadership and governance as Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Committee for the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists' Association (NZSTA), Ethics Committee Member for the NZSTA and as a Board Member of the UpsideDowns Education Trust.
